Robert Vandersee Spillare
Robert Vandersee Spillare is an Italian-Brazilian writer and genealogical researcher whose work moves between memory, historical investigation, and literary creation.
I grew up surrounded by stories that carried both pride of belonging and the lingering presence of irretrievable losses. I grew up hearing different languages, in a home where the kitchen was a meeting point, a space of conversation and continuity — where narratives circulated naturally as part of everyday life.
Research was the first path. Writing, however, was always present and, over time, found different ways of expressing itself. I have worked as a genealogical researcher for more than two decades, developing studies based on historical archives, family records, and migration paths connected to European immigration in Brazil, combining documentary rigor with narrative sensibility.
Over the years, I have published works and articles in Brazil and abroad, exploring different ways of narrating the past. From this experience also emerged a literary impulse: to transform historical traces into living stories, where ordinary people and forgotten memories take center stage.
Over time, my writing expanded into broader forms. From historical records to fiction based on real events, and later to epic fantasy and literary imagination, my work has consistently returned to a central axis: giving voice to what has been forgotten, interrupted, or silenced. Not coincidentally, many of my narratives are shaped by ordinary human figures, especially women, whose stories remain at the margins of formal records.
I write out of love for memory. I found in writing a way to materialize the act of remembering, to preserve what tends to disappear, and to reconstruct, even if only partially, what time fragments.
My trajectory includes institutional recognition, with the Honra ao Mérito award from the Municipal Chamber of Vitória (2024) and the Braz da Costa Rubim Medal (2025), granted for contributions to genealogical and historical research. I also hold chair number 7 at the Aracruz Academy of Letters, as a corresponding member, with Francisco Schwartz as patron.
I live in Bristol, United Kingdom, where I continue to work between research, writing, and literary projects. This position between geographies also shapes my work, marked by themes of displacement, continuity, and identity.
